Lilith in the birth chart

Black Moon in house 3

In house 3, the Call makes itself heard in speech and those close by. I would like to show what this lack asks, and why its answer is found not in house 3 but in the house opposite.

What house 3 calls for

The third house is the house of ordinary exchange: everyday words, what one learns at school, brothers and sisters, neighbors, short journeys. A Black Moon here sets the lack in speech itself. I meet, with this placement, people who talk a great deal and feel they have said nothing, or who stay silent because the right word never comes in time; minds that connect everything and settle nowhere. The lack is not a flaw. It is a place left open, and that place calls.

The answer stands opposite

Here is the point of method that governs this whole page. Each Black Moon has its respondent, the point facing it in the chart: to the apogee, which moves the Moon away, answers the perigee, which brings it close. The Call occupies one end of the axis, the answer the other. A Black Moon in house 3 therefore has its answer in house 9. What is missing from close speech is not repaired by speaking more, but by giving oneself a direction worth saying.

Three Black Moons, three respondents. Christos answers the Mean, the Alicorn: the Word that accepts to take flesh. Apollo answers the Corrected, the Unicorn: attunement that accepts a realizable form. Priapus answers the True, Athena: vital power become presence in matter. For each, here is the opening of its worksheet in house 9, as I wrote it in volume 2: the figure, the risk, the answer. The facets that follow remain in the book.

Mean Black Moon in house 3: Christos in house 9

The Mean in house 3 carries the Call of the Alicorn in speech and those close by. Its answer is Christos in house 9, “the first departure”:

The Pioneer in house 9 takes to the road before knowing all its passages. Whether an actual journey or a philosophical commitment, his departure gives form to the trust that a horizon is worth reaching. He accepts the uncertainty of the first step. A new horizon displaces the previous one. The person collects journeys and beliefs without remaining long enough to learn a language or live what they have just discovered. Give the journey time to become an inhabited experience. The trust of departure deepens through this stay.

Corrected Black Moon in house 3: Apollo in house 9

The Corrected in house 3 carries the Call of the Unicorn in speech and those close by. Its answer is Apollo in house 9, “Giving Meaning a Direction”:

In house 9, the Archer-Justiciar passes through convictions, journeys, teaching, and the search for a vaster horizon. Here, the arrow naturally finds the distance. The person knows how to defend a vision and transmit what gives existence a direction. They confront their ideas with other cultures, other knowledges, and other ways of living. Their conviction can become a compass for those who had lost their heading. They teach with force when they speak from an experience passed through rather than from a borrowed certainty.

True Black Moon in house 3: Priapus in house 9

The True in house 3 carries the Call of Athena in speech and those close by. Its answer is Priapus in house 9, “the desire that wants to conquer elsewhere”:

The Phallus in house 9 directs its appetite elsewhere: distant lands, new beliefs, experiences still unknown. The desire to taste the world gives departure a concrete vigor. This appetite can turn into perpetual flight, a desire that never attaches itself to a place, a belief, or a person long enough to truly inhabit it. Stop in a place one has reached, stay there, learn to know what the first impulse only glimpsed.

What the book adds

Each worksheet of volume 2 continues beyond these three paragraphs: the facets of the respondent, one by one, with their gift, their drift and their attunement. For Christos, the Proclaimer, the Builder, the Visionary, the Reformer; for Apollo, the Poet, the Radiant Sovereign, the Healing Prophet, the Lawgiving Physician; for Priapus, the Pruning Hook, the Club, the Horn of Plenty, Ugliness. That is where the reading becomes precise, and that is where I left it.

Frequently asked questions

What does Lilith in the 3rd house mean?

That the Call of the Black Moon makes itself heard in speech and those close by. I do not read it as a shadow at this point of life, but as a lack that asks for an answer, and that answer takes shape in the opposite house, house 9.

Should I look at the mean, true or corrected Black Moon in house 3?

All three, if they are there. They are not always in the same house, and each has its respondent: Christos for the Mean, Apollo for the Corrected, Priapus for the True. The application tells you which ones are in house 3.
