Lilith in the birth chart

Black Moon in house 1

In house 1, the Call makes itself heard in presence. I would like to show what this lack asks, and why its answer is found not in house 1 but in the house opposite.

What house 1 calls for

The first house begins at the Ascendant, the point of the zodiac rising in the east at birth, and it describes how a person enters the world before any word is spoken. When a Black Moon stands here, the lack lodges in that very entrance. The person does not know how to be there; or knows it too well, and holds the place like a role. I often meet, with this placement, people who feel they are never quite present to their own presence, and who compensate with bearing, gesture, assertion, without the void being filled. The lack is not a flaw. It is a place left open, and that place calls.

The answer stands opposite

Here is the point of method that governs this whole page. Each Black Moon has its respondent, the point facing it in the chart: to the apogee, which moves the Moon away, answers the perigee, which brings it close. The Call occupies one end of the axis, the answer the other. A Black Moon in house 1 therefore has its answer in house 7. What is missing from presence is not repaired within presence, but in the encounter. I never read house 1 without house 7.

Three Black Moons, three respondents. Christos answers the Mean, the Alicorn: the Word that accepts to take flesh. Apollo answers the Corrected, the Unicorn: attunement that accepts a realizable form. Priapus answers the True, Athena: vital power become presence in matter. For each, here is the opening of its worksheet in house 7, as I wrote it in volume 2: the figure, the risk, the answer. The facets that follow remain in the book.

Mean Black Moon in house 1: Christos in house 7

The Mean in house 1 carries the Call of the Alicorn in presence. Its answer is Christos in house 7, “the first step toward the other”:

A hand extended in the middle of the bridge: the Pioneer in house 7 dares to propose a relationship, a union, a partnership without any guarantee of a response. He commits his faith to the possibility of a bond and risks the first yes. Always proposing, deciding, leading can become a condition of the relationship. The person no longer knows how to receive their partner's initiative, as though losing their place in doing so. Welcoming in turn what the other dares to propose restores the possibility of reciprocal movement to the bond.

Corrected Black Moon in house 1: Apollo in house 7

The Corrected in house 1 carries the Call of the Unicorn in presence. Its answer is Apollo in house 7, “Fighting With the Other, Not Against Them”:

In house 7, the Archer-Justiciar meets partnership, contract, and the declared adversary. The response takes form within a relationship where each person must keep their place. The person possesses a keen sense of reciprocity. They know how to defend a partner, negotiate a clear rule, and recognize the legitimacy of a point of view opposed to their own. They can turn conflict into a search for a more just accord. Courage here consists in staying within the relationship when difference appears. The arrow does not serve to eliminate the other, but to reach the true subject of the disagreement.

True Black Moon in house 1: Priapus in house 7

The True in house 1 carries the Call of Athena in presence. Its answer is Priapus in house 7, “the desire that meets the other”:

In house 7, desire addresses the partner frankly. This immediate attraction brings carnal warmth to the bond and makes perceptible what seeks expression in the encounter. This raw desire can reduce the other to an object of appetite, forgetting the person behind the body one desires, until the partner feels possessed rather than loved. Desiring with this intensity requires recognizing the whole person, their will and limits: the other's body belongs to them.

What the book adds

Each worksheet of volume 2 continues beyond these three paragraphs: the facets of the respondent, one by one, with their gift, their drift and their attunement. For Christos, the Proclaimer, the Builder, the Visionary, the Reformer; for Apollo, the Poet, the Radiant Sovereign, the Healing Prophet, the Lawgiving Physician; for Priapus, the Pruning Hook, the Club, the Horn of Plenty, Ugliness. That is where the reading becomes precise, and that is where I left it.

Frequently asked questions

What does Lilith in the 1st house mean?

That the Call of the Black Moon makes itself heard in presence. I do not read it as a shadow at this point of life, but as a lack that asks for an answer, and that answer takes shape in the opposite house, house 7.

Should I look at the mean, true or corrected Black Moon in house 1?

All three, if they are there. They are not always in the same house, and each has its respondent: Christos for the Mean, Apollo for the Corrected, Priapus for the True. The application tells you which ones are in house 1.
